Description

A well-proportioned 19th-century glazed bookcase cabinet in richly figured rosewood, of classical architectural form. The rectangular top is finished with a moulded cornice incorporating a finely carved bead-and-reel frieze above a deeper band of stylised leaf carving, creating a strong, elegant horizontal line.
Below, a pair of arched glazed doors open to a fitted interior of adjustable shelves, ideal for books or display. The doors retain their original glass and are fitted with a working lock and key. The central meeting stile is ornamented with a vertical run of turned bead moulding, adding depth and refinement to the front.
The front elevation is framed by boldly carved fluted pilasters with stylised capitals, reinforcing the cabinet’s classical influence. The sides are veneered in well-figured rosewood, showing attractive grain patterns and tonal variation consistent with quality mid-19th century craftsmanship.
Raised on a substantial plinth base with further beaded moulding, the cabinet incorporates a discreet concealed drawer, cleverly integrated and accessed via the base, adding an element of practical ingenuity.
