Description

A substantial and finely executed mahogany breakfront bookcase of impressive scale and strong architectural presence, crafted in the Chippendale Revival manner during the early twentieth century. The cabinet is distinguished by its bold stepped façade, richly figured mahogany veneers, and confident carved ornamentation throughout.
The upper section is arranged with four glazed doors set within a breakfront configuration. The outer doors are adorned with elegant oval carved surrounds embellished with acanthus flourishes, lending a refined decorative emphasis. The two central doors are fitted with astragal glazing bars, creating a classical window-pane effect that balances the more elaborate outer panels. The glazing is framed by finely selected mahogany veneers displaying pronounced flame and ribbon figuring, further enhanced by a warm, lustrous polish.
A deeply moulded cornice carved with egg-and-dart detailing crowns the piece, reinforcing its Georgian inspiration and adding visual weight to the composition. The stepped profile contributes depth and proportion, ensuring the cabinet commands attention within a room without overwhelming its setting.
The interior is fully lined in mahogany and fitted with adjustable glass shelves across all four compartments, allowing flexible display while maintaining full visibility. The back panels are veneered to match, reflecting the quality of construction. Brass hinges and inset locks complete the upper section, consistent with period craftsmanship.
Below, the base comprises four paneled cupboard doors, each centred with an applied carved cartouche framed by scrolling acanthus and rococo-inspired ornament. The bold carving continues across the shaped apron, which is richly decorated with foliate motifs and raised on substantial cabriole legs terminating in pronounced ball-and-claw feet. The stance is confident and grounded, characteristic of Chippendale Revival interpretation.
Constructed from solid mahogany with highly figured veneers and carved solid mahogany detailing, the cabinet remains in very good antique condition, displaying a consistent polished surface with minor wear commensurate with age and use.
