Description

An impressive early 20th century carved oak refectory dining table of substantial scale and striking presence, executed in a robust Jacobean Revival manner. The table is of generous proportions and constructed in solid oak throughout, the rectangular top formed with two draw leaves that extend smoothly from either end, allowing the table to be increased in length while maintaining a cohesive and balanced appearance. The surface displays a rich, deep brown tone with a well-figured grain that enhances the character of the timber.
The frieze is boldly ornamented with a continuous band of carved lunettes interspersed with stylised foliate scrollwork, a motif closely associated with 17th century English precedents. The carving is crisply executed and evenly spaced, providing rhythmic visual interest along the length of the table while reinforcing its architectural solidity.
The table is supported on four substantial bulbous and gadrooned legs, each richly carved with foliate detailing and rising from square block feet. The upper sections are accented with carved scroll brackets beneath the frieze, lending a sense of structural articulation. The legs are united by a robust H-form stretcher with a central longitudinal rail, ensuring excellent stability and reflecting traditional refectory construction techniques.
When closed, the table presents a strong rectangular profile suitable for everyday dining; when extended, the draw leaves increase its capacity significantly, making it ideal for larger gatherings. The mechanism is integrated seamlessly within the frame, preserving the integrity of the carved frieze whether open or closed.
