Description

A fine and substantial Regency period open breakfront bookcase, constructed in richly figured rosewood, the timber of excellent quality with bold, variegated grain and a deep, well-developed patina throughout.
Of architectural form, the bookcase features a gently projecting central section flanked by recessed end bays, all surmounted by a stepped and moulded top. The façade is articulated by elegant fluted pilasters, each crisply carved with foliate capitals and bases, reflecting the refined neoclassical taste of the early 19th century. The frieze and shelf fronts are finished with delicate beaded mouldings, providing subtle ornamentation.
The interior is fitted with adjustable shelving across three principal divisions, allowing for flexible storage. The wider central bay accommodates larger volumes or display, while the flanking sections are arranged in narrower compartments, offering a balanced and practical layout. The interior is finished in a darker tone, enhancing contrast and emphasizing the richness of the rosewood exterior.
Raised on a continuous plinth base that follows the breakfront outline, the bookcase has a solid and well-proportioned stance.
