Description

A superb late nineteenth-century mahogany open bookcase of generous proportions and refined craftsmanship. Executed in richly figured mahogany, the piece displays a deep, warm tone enhanced by a carefully polished finish that draws out the natural movement and depth of the grain across the top, sides, and interior surfaces.

The upper frieze is ornamented with an elegant band of inlaid foliate scrollwork in contrasting satinwood, running the full width beneath a moulded cornice. This restrained decorative detail lends distinction while preserving the clean architectural character of the design. Fine string inlay descends the vertical uprights, subtly framing the divisions and reinforcing the balanced symmetry of the front.

The bookcase is arranged in two principal sections: a narrower bay to one side and a wider adjoining section, together forming a subtle breakfront profile. Both sections are fitted with adjustable shelves, offering practical flexibility for housing volumes of varying heights. The proportions are well considered, making the piece equally suited to a working library or to the display of decorative objects.

The sides are panelled in beautifully figured mahogany and bordered with delicate inlay, demonstrating that the cabinet was finished to a high standard throughout and intended to stand freely as well as against a wall. It rests on a solid plinth base that provides visual weight and structural stability.
